Bastard was a peculiar word, or that was at least what Chael believed. Very few people seemed to genuinely care about the carnal process that went into making a bastard, but among those who called themselves noble, that word was meant to convey an insult of the highest order. And to the assembled knights, lords, and otherwise noble looking people of the army of the newly constituted Kingdom of Fhael, pedigree and title were much more important than basic competence. But much to their dismay, the crown prince had taken up with a bastard and his little group of miscreants, as they thought, to aid him in his campaign to reclaim the kingdom. Chael was just relieved that the insults had been reduced to something so mundane as his birth. Since as long as he could remember the strange abilities he possessed had marked him as a freak to some and a tool to be wielded by others. It was not uncommon for those around him to call him darkspawn or darkborn. Darkborn, Chael whispered the word to himself. The many jeering simpletons who tossed that word at him as hatefully as they might sling a clump of mud, had no idea how right they may have been.

Ashfall Empire

The world is broken, but Anders is the only one who seems to see it. A child of the streets of Rohun, he has learned the hard way that only the crafty and persistent can survive. A strange request from Samuel Archellious one of the wealthiest men in the city makes it to him through the irregular channels usually reserved for career criminals and societal outcasts. The answers to his questions about the wrongness of the world lead him and his new mentor, Samuel, on a collision course with the rulers of the city; from the depths of ancient catacombs to the towers of new industry. In a world where the haves live in Edenic gardens under the shield of glass domes and the have-nots are left to toil for whatever scraps they’re allowed, where the burning embers of supposed progress fall like snow and the secrets of the elite are more dangerous than gunpowder. Anders will have to embrace certain new realities and a bond he hadn’t thought possible to survive.

Polaris

In the distant future mankind has conquered the stars but still fails to conquer the demons that plague us in our day. A vast civil war has finally reached Earth’s doorstep. What was once the axis of all human activity in the explored galaxy is now the final battlefield. Admiral Hazen Rhys commands the last fleet of Earth’s defense against his former peers who joined common cause with rebels who wish to govern by strength rather than consent. But when he is betrayed by someone on his own ship, he is forced to surrender his fleet and with it, Earth to the rebels. Hazen, left marooned on a failed colony run by street gangs and criminals, more than a decade’s worth of travel to the nearest colonized system; finds himself in possession of an illegal relay ship. The only means of travel that could ferry him and a crack team of his former officers and sailors back to civilization without taking years. But the original traitor remains anonymous, and the rebels maintain a stranglehold on occupied space.

A guerilla campaign against the most sophisticated ships and weapons ever employed by human militaries, outnumbered a thousand to one, and despised by his own crew for surrendering Earth in the first place. Per ardua ad astra.

Ryan O'Neill grew up in Superior, Wisconsin. The fourth of five children, he fell in love with the many worlds of fantasy from an early age after his father first introduced him to the Lord of the Rings.
